Cool as a Cucumber

Yesterday Happy Day Vintage posted an Etsy Treasury titled "Cool as a Cucumber". Stacey Montgomery (the Happy Day Vintage Executive Buyer & the one who makes all the HDV treasuries) put this little piece of art together and dedicated to little 'ol me (Dana Douglas, Happy Day Vintage Shop Owner)...Thanks Stacey!

The inspiration for this treasury:
This year I made my first attempt at gardening. This cucumber is the first of my garden bounty. As you can tell I'm rather proud of this cucumber. I fully realize I'm a dork for taking a picture with a cucumber but I don't care, I have learned to embrace my dorky side.

Fashion Friday with Etsy, Roller Skating

Yesterday I spent a good portion of the afternoon helping my three year old daughter and my daughter's BFF roller skate up and down the sidewalk. It brought back happy memories of spending an entire summer day roller skating around town with my big sister. Mind you this was back in the day when parents let their kids play outside, by themselves, all day long and it wasn't considered neglect (how did we ever survive those days without constant parental supervision, car seats, helmets, etc... I digress...) Teaching my daughter to roller skate was the inspiration for today's Fashion Friday.

Let's start with the most important item...the skates!, and work our way up.

The Skates

Vtg Roller Skates UniSex Red White and Blue 7.5 W/5 M $32.00

Leg Warmers:
Pink Leg Warmers $18.00

Outfit:

NEW WAVE VALLEY GIRL Vintage 80s Pink/White Stripe Jumper Shorts Romper $24.00

The crowning Glory:

Two 80s Banana Hair Clips, Purple and Black $6.00

This is a classy outfit and I'm sure you're wondering how much the ENTIRE thing would cost...
$80.00
That's right, get the skates, leg warmers, outfit and two banana clips for a mere $80.00
Thank you for reading the Happy Day Vintage blog and as always

Ten Reasons to Buy Vintage

10. Never Goes Out of Style: The definition of vintage is 20 years or older. If your vintage item is 20+ years old and still fits your decor, style, etc... then it's going to stay in style.

9. New Life for Old Items: So many vintage items can serve double duty. Example; Luggage can be used for travel, stylish storage, as end tables, art, a cat bed, etc... (see blog post from June 10th for more ideas on how to use vintage luggage)

8. Tells a Story: Each vintage treasure has been previously loved. It's hard not to love something that, in it's past life, gave so much joy to someone else

7. Quality: "They don't make 'em like they used to." - So true! If an item is 20 + years and it still works, looks good, is functional, stylish, etc... then it's bound to last at least another 20 year.

6. One -of-a-kind Find: The great thing about vintage is there are very few of each item left in the world. Buy vintage and you won't see the same thing at your friends house down the street. Purchase vintage clothing and you won't need to worry about going to a party and seeing someone wearing the same dress.

5. Conversation Starter: Unique, nostalgic, vintage treasures always remind people of a
story = good conversation starter.

4. Memories/Nostalgia: Going along with the above reason, almost every vintage treasure brings back a memory of some sort. Maybe it's of your Grandmother baking cookies, your mom getting dressed for a party, or your Grandpa reading you a story. No matter what memories are triggered, it's always nice to reminisce.

3. Support Charities: Many vintage treasures are discovered at donation centers which help out your city. Personally, I find the majority of my finds at Good Will and Salvation Army. It's a win/win situation - I get a treasure and support the community.

2. Recycling/Reusing: good for Environment! Enough said.

1. Less Expensive: More style and less expensive, what could be better then that? There are plenty of vintage shops on Etsy, like Happy Day Vintage, that sell vintage clothing, housewares, luggage and whatever else you can think of at a wallet friendly cost.

A Vintage Outfit for the No Doubt Concert

No Doubt has always been my favorite band. I adore Gwen and secretly (or not so secretly) wish I was her BFF. Last weekend my handsome husband took me to their concert. No Doubt did NOT disappoint. I had the time of my life. I only wish I had the foresight to plan ahead and find a unique vintage outfit to wear to the concert. Maybe then Gwen would have asked me to come back stage, become her new BFF and her full time fashion consultant? (once again, a girl can dream). It's been a week since the concert and I'm still thinking about it. I went on Etsy and found the outfit that I SHOULD have gotten had I planned ahead. Enjoy!

Left, Middle: yellow .vintage. polka-dot belt $18.00
Right, Bottom: Outrageous 1980s Houndstooth Check Jeans $35.00
Grand Total for Entire Outfit: 130.00

And there you have it! An entire outfit ready to be rocked out.
