Fashion Friday - The Retro and SWANK Lifestyle
Fashion isn't always about what you wear it's also about your surroundings, your home, your lifestyle.
Living in the St. Paul/Minneapolis Metro area gives way to a hotbed of amazing retro shops. One of my favorites is a jackpot of everything I love about the 50's, 60's and 70's. My heart races the second I walk though those doors. It's like I'm walking into a candy store...an eye candy store. I'm talking about "SWANK Interiors". This amazing shop is located in the heart of St. Paul. It offers everything one needs, and more importantly wants, to make their lifestyle fashionable.
Now the good, okay great, news for my Happy Day Vintage customer.... HDV is now featuring items from the bricks and mortar shop of "SWANK Interiors". Stay tuned to HDV for listings of fantastic SWANK merchandise. We will feature a wide range of items. Everything from kitsch, collectibles, sculptures, clothing, decor, luggage, and even furniture will soon be listed on Happy Day Vintage!
Enough talk. Here are some pictures of "SWANK Interiors". If you see something you like feel free to convo me and let me know. I will do my best to get it for you!

I hate good byes....
Every once in awhile I purchase something for my Happy Day Vintage shop which I simply cannot give up. Here are a few of those items:
I don't normally gravitate toward the antique treasures (I prefer retro/mod/vintage) but I couldn't live without this window and it's matching counterpart. These two windows flank either side of our fireplace. I don't know where they came from but it's fun coming up with outrageous stories on their original location. They make for a fun conversation starter.
This lamp is cork and crazy... I love it. Obviously the material drew me to it but I fell in love with the sexy, curvy shape. It sits on the end table (below) next to our couch.
The end table above started out a dark brown, faux wood color. I painted it black (although I need to do one or two more coats) and put it next to our couch. I love functional art.
I just purchased this fantastic office chair. Obviously, it sits in our office. I giggle every time I look at it because it reminds me of the movie "Anchorman".
This is the first item I ever kept for myself, vs putting it for sale in the Happy Day Vintage Shop. Much like the lamp above, I love the curvy shape. I also like the bright white color. It adds a pop of interest in our dark orange office.
Thank you for reading my blog.

Fashion Friday with Etsy, Mad Men
I am in love with the outfits on Mad Men. This week I felt the need to do a blog post featuring Joan as our fashion icon.

The show is set in the early 60's. The 60's were a transitional period in women's fashion. The hemlines are becoming shorter as opposed to the earlier fifties style of a circle skirt that has more of a flat front and that is longer and fuller. By 1960, there's a gathering at the waist and the hem length has come up a lot. Joan, the vixen of the show, is more fashion forward wearing clothing that's fitted showing the silhouette of her body.
I picked out a few items that would fit the form fitting, silhouette showing, curve hugging, head turning style that Joan wears so well:

Upper Left: Vintage Blue as Sapphire Wool Skirt $28.00
Lower Left: Vintage Rare Custom High Heels $69.00
Upper Right:French Blue Angora Sweater $34.00
Lower Right: Joan
Outfit Total: $131.00

How to make Vintage work with your current closet
Adding a vintage piece to your wardrobe creates endless and unique outfit potential. A vintage dress, like the one shown on the left, is so versatile. It looks fabulous alone and it looks insanely fab mixed with a few basic pieces.
I took a white shirt, a pair of jeans, and a black jacket (three items most people have in their closet) and created a few different looks. It's amazing how one dress can work for so many occasions with just a few minor tweaks:

These are just a few of your options. Not shown here are seemly endless looks one could create by adding tights, boots, heels, and/or different accessories. Get creative and create a look completely your own.
Thanks for reading my blog and
