Nolan's Treasure Box

My son and daughter have watched and even helped me make a ton of jewelry boxes. With every jewelry box refurbished my kids have asked to have one of their own. I have promised that someday I would refurbish a box special for each of them. Finally, I made good on my promise.

Here's Nolan's Treasure box...

Yes, I said treasure box. In Nolan's words, "Mom, we can call mine a treasure box because I'm not a girl. I don't like fancy make up and rings. I'm a boy so mine can have boy stuff."

Nolan picked out the paper and color scheme. As you can see from the pictures below he even did most of the work. The paper doesn't lay perfectly, nor is the box in perfect condition. Truth be told I would be mortified if anyone associated this Treasure Box with me/my work. However, my Son created it (with a little help from me). He is dang proud of his treasure box and I am dang proud of him. Therefore I will claim this treasure box as a Nolan/Dana Douglas Original Design.

Nolan has filled his treasure box with a plethora of Squinkies and Garbage Guys. Occasionally a race car, Lego guy, or random what-cha-ma-jigger will make it's way into the treasure box.

Nolan is happy. I'm happy because his dresser is less cluttered. All is right with the world.

I will also be blogging about my daughter's jewelry box. It's pink, sparkly and filled with trinkets galore (every girl's dream).

Happy Valentines Day! I hope your day is filled with happiness and love.

The below jewelry box was listed in HDV just last week. The box sold immediately. In fact I had several offers on this particular piece.

Sarah, the women who purchased this jewelry box, bought it for her 9 year old daughter as a Valentine's gift. This morning I was sent a few pictures that made me beyond happy... so happy I had to share them with you.

Tuesday night I listed six new jewelry boxes. Thus far three have sold but there are still three remaining. In the mean time I am busy creating new jewelry boxes to be listed this Wednesday, February 15th.

Here's what has sold thus far:

The above is one of my favorites. A mom bought this jewelry box for her 8 year old daughter.

This blue and white polka dot jewelry box found a home in Wyoming.

Finally the bright number above sold and will be given as a birthday gift for a 9 year old girl.

As mentioned there are still three jewelry boxes available from this week (see pic below) and more to be listed on Wednesday, February 15th.

The Sophia

My daughter is six years old and fortunate enough to have many amazing little girlfriends. There have been a lot of birthday parties in the past couple months. Lucky for me these girls love getting custom jewelry boxes and have even come to expect it from my daughter.

This particular jewelry box was for a very special little girl named Sophia. Sophia has an extremely kind and loving heart. Sophia is a fashionista, a decorator and a hostess extraordinaire. Because of her amazing sense of style, I knew Sophia would appreciate the opportunity to help design her jewelery box.

I provided Sophia with a array of paper samples. She narrowed the pile down to her 5 favorites....from there I went ahead and created "The Sophia".

Below is a picture of Sophia opening her gift while the rest of the girls gather around. I was told she loved her gift. Words cannot express how happy this makes me.

All My Little Ladies!

As of late, the little ladies of the world have been my best customers. Girls from the ages of newborn (a great gift idea for a baby shower) to teens have been wanting, getting and coveting the HDV refurbished jewelery boxes.

Many girls use the their boxes to store jewelry while others (such as my daughter) use the jewelry box to store every tiny little treasure she can shove in it. Still others use their jewelry box to organize American Girl doll accessories.

Here are a few (and by "a few" I mean a ton) examples of the recent jewelry boxes I've created for our younger generation....

I cannot tell you how many vintage jewelry boxes I've passed up purchasing because the interior was in poor condition. It's so frustrating! Well, I finally had enough.... a girl can only take so much before taking matters into her own hands. I grabbed a cool looking on the outside, yet messed up on the inside jewelry box. I then proceeded to completely demolish the inside. It took a little trial and error but I finally figured out a way to rebuild and refurbish a jewelry box from the inside out.

Here's an example of a jewelry box with a inside that's been refurbished.
This particular jewelry box would be perfect for a little girls room. The inside is bright, cheery and a little eclectic.

If I do say so myself, I LOVE how this turned out. Granted it was a lot of extra work but the end result made it all worth it.

Spring Inspired Creations

The holidays have been crazy busy, and I've loved every minute of it. Over the holidays I had the opportunity to create custom jewelry boxes of all kinds... for wives, babies first Christmas, kids, tweens, teens, and sisters. It's been an amazing season.

Now that the holiday of custom jewelry boxes is over I have had a chance to create some of my own designs. Here's a taste of what's going on in my workshop....

Tetorial Tuesday: How to make Mod Podge

When refurbishing vintage jewelry boxes, I go through A LOT of decoupage. Inevitably I always run out when I need it most. The last thing I want to do, in the middle of a project, is load up the kids and run to the store for more. I've learned to be resourceful and make my own recipe which often works better then the real thing.

Granted I normally make small amounts at a time but thanks to Pinterest I was inspired to whip up a larger batch. Here's my homemade version:

Ingredients:

A jar

Left over glue (I normally use Aleene's but Elmers works well too)

Water

Step One: Pour your left over glue into an empty container

Step Two: Add water. I normally start with one part water two parts glue. I actually added too much water in the picture above and had to add more glue because I like my mixture a little on the thicker side.

Step Three: Find a cute little boy, or girl, to shake it like a Polaroid picture. Okay, a cute kid isn't necessary but it makes the process so much more fun.

Voila! Homemade decoupage. I used my homemade blend to add a little fabric to the jar lid. Note: You may prefer the mixture to be a little thicker or thinner depending on your projects.

A Sweet Birthday Gift for a Sweet Girl

This  past weekend my daughters friend, Megan, celebrated her 9th birthday.  Megan is a sweet girl who spends a lot of time playing at our house. Carly (my daughter) and Megan often wander into my work room eager to help create jewelry boxes. Megan has even picked out her favorite papers and asked me, on numerous occasions, if I would one day make her a jewelry box. 

When my daughter was invited to Megan's birthday the obvious gift was a custom jewelry box. I incorporated her favorite papers and colors. The result was a jewelry box fit for a princess.

Work it Wed- how to create a great gift

What girl doesn't love to pamper herself? How about giving the gift (to a friend or to yourself) of homemade bath salts. Bath Salts are easy to make and better yet they look adorable packaged in vintage salt and pepper shakers. It's a unique and thoughtful gift... so let's work it!

How to make homemade bath salts according to Martha Stewart:

Turn a plain old soak into a real retreat with bath salts you make  yourself. Start with about 4 cups of sea salt or kosher salt. Mix in  several drops of an aromatic bath oil (available at bath and beauty  stores) and, if you wish, dried fragrant plants, such as lavender or  eucalyptus. Pour into a jar for yourself or to give as a gift. Use a few  spoonfuls of salts per bath; to keep herbs from floating, spoon the  mixture into a spice sachet (available at gourmet grocery stores).

Work it Wed - Champagne Punch Recipe from 1917

I realize the above picture doesn't necessarily apply to our recipe but it is a picture of champagne and it is hilarious therefore I deem it perfect for this post.

For a party of 6.

Ingredients

juice of 1 lemon
1/4 pound bar sugar
1 jigger strawberry syrup
1 quart bottle champagne
1 sliced orange
3 slices pineapple

Instructions

Into a glass pitcher pour the lemon juice, and add bar sugar,  strawberry syrup, and champagne. Stir with ladle and drop in orange and  pineapple. Decorate with fruit and serve in champagne goblets.

This weeks Work it Wednesday Recipe is for Apple Pie filling. This recipe comes from The Virgina Housewife Cookbook of 1860

Ingredients

ripe apples
powdered sugar
rose water
cloves
crust

Instructions

Put a crust in the bottom of a dish, put on it a layer of ripe  apples, pared and sliced thin; then a layer of powdered sugar; do this  alternately till the dish is full; put in a few tea-spoonsful of rose  water and some cloves; put on a crust and bake it.

I grew up a Pastor's kid in a small town located in south-west Minnesota. Oddly enough the cookbook created a bit of a competition between the women.

Now that I'm a wife and a mother I find myself looking for new and creative recipes to serve my family and friends. Truth be told many of my favorite recipes come from the good 'ol Church Lady Cookbooks. These cookbooks are too good to keep to myself. Therefore I have decided to pull 'em out and share a few recipes for the "work it Wed" blog posts.

The first cookbook I'm sharing is a great little book filled with original recipes from the ladies of St Mary's Church in Chokio, MN.

As you can see this cookbook is filled with recipes. Don't you just wonder what's in there? What family recipes, that have been handed down for generations, are hiding in this little gem?

Today I'm sharing a salad, straight from this book and submitted by Mrs V.L. Harman, which would be perfect to bring on a picnic.

Work it Wed - A dish to Pass

Ahhhh,  It's finally summer which means summer BBQ's, picnics and  get-togethers.  This also means I need to find some creative salad,  appetizer and dessert recipes to bring to these parties. 

This  got me wondering what women in the 50's made and brought to their shindigs. No doubt it wasn't a plastic tub of macaroni salad from  Target (Patti, that one is for you). 

Wonder no longer. 

Pineapple Upside Down Cake - From Scratch

Ingredients:

1/2 cup of melted butter
1 can of crushed or sliced pineapple 14oz
2 cups of cake flour
2 teaspoons of baking powder
2 cups of sugar
3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon of hot milk
1 1/2 cup of brown sugar
1 small can of maraschino cherries, halved
5 eggs
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
Instructions:
1)Preheat oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit while mixing the cake
2)Take an 8 X 12 rectangle pan or round equivalent and pour the melted butter into it.
3)Sprinkle the bottom of the pan with the brown sugar.
4)Place the pineapples in the pan.   If using the crushed pineapple try to spread it out evenly.  If using  sliced pineapples, try to arrange them in a uniformed manner.
5)Now place the cherries in an orderly fashion  into the pineapples.  The cherries look very pretty in the middles of  pineapple slices.  If you prefer, the cherries can be omitted all  together.
6)Sift the flour and baking powder together 3 times, set aside.
7)Beat the eggs for 5 minutes at a medium speed.   They should appear thick and fluffy.
8)Gradually add the sugar while beating it in with the eggs.  Then add in the lemon juice.
9)Fold in the flour and baking soda mixture while gradually adding the hot milk.
10)Once the cake batter is blended well and smooth, pour it over the fruit inside the pan.
11)Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 45 minutes.     
12)Turn over onto a dish while still warm.

Voila! A lovely, elegant, and delish dessert to pass at your next summer get together. 
Now, If you think I've actually tried making this then 
I adore you for thinking so highly of me. However, I will more then likely never make something this labor intensive.

It's been another busy week here at HDV....

Last Saturday the kids and I took my mom out for lunch, in honor of Mother's Day. We gave her a large jewelry box I made especially for her. She loved it.

On Sunday my handsome husband brought me breakfast in bed, tulips, a new wallet (cause I am always loosing things in my very large and over-sized purse) and best of all he gave me a brand new sander. He bought this particular sander because it has different attachments making it easier for me to sand down different jewelry boxes. I love him for thinking of that. Here's me with my new sander..

Work it Wed - To remove or Not to Remove?

My pilates instructor recently asked me to sell an amazing, and tarnished, silver set which includes a tray, pitcher, and much more. My plan for today's blog post was to do a tutorial on how to properly polish silver. However, as I researched the process I found many pictures of silver both tarnished and polished. As I paged through the pictures I realized I love the look of tarnished silver. It's beautiful in it's own way.

So for today's blog post has changed directions and I'm going to show a few pictures of lovely tarnished silver. But, if you want to know how to polish silver check out Martha Stewart.

Behind the Scenes of HDV - Week in Review

It's been a great week. 

First, I finished a custom order for a lovely Mama in Alaska. She's going to use the boxes to organize her sewing notions. 

The kids and I made a quick stop at a thrift store on Tuesday. We hit the mother load of vintage jewelry boxes just waiting for a make-over:

Finally, last night I ran to the store and ended up coming home with a lot more then bargained for.  On the way home from the store I drove through the neighborhood setting garbage out for garbage day (as described in last weeks blog post). I found a round suitcase and the chairs pictured below. There were actually four chairs but my car only had room for two. Oh well, two is better then none. 

I love the backs on these chairs. I can't decide what color to paint them? I have so many ideas.

Work it Wed - Drink of the Kentucky Derby

I love the Kentucky Derby. I've never been and I can't say I've even sat down and watched all the excitement that IS the Kentucky Derby. There's something about the traditions that gets me excited and keeps me wanting more of "The Run for the Roses"

As mentioned the Kentucky Derby is full of tradition and that's why, again, I get jacked up every year for this big event.

Keeping with my tradition of loving good cocktails, I picked the traditional Kentucky Derby drink to showcase in today's Work it Wednesday blog post:

 Early Times Mint Julep                    

2 cups sugar
2 cups water
Sprigs of fresh mint
Crushed ice
Early Times Kentucky Whiskey
Silver Julep Cups

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water  together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with  six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one  julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one  tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whiskey.  Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a  sprig of fresh mint.

Saturday - Behind the Scenes of HDV

Starting at the end of April a beautiful thing happens....while most call it trash day I call it treasure day! One day a year our town allows each house to put all their unwanted trash, no matter what it is, on the corner to be picked up by the city. What ends up happening is people drive around with their trailers, rummaging through others trash and taking what they want. The entire ritual is kinda weird and slightly uncomfortable.

In between breakfast, cleaning the house, rotating loads of laundry, taking the dog out, kids bath time, working on jewelry boxes, etc... the kids and I took a quick drive through town to see what we could find in the trash piles along the streets.

I admit, it was weird going through others trash but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.

And here's a little video of our adventure. It's short and sweet and I'm looking super fly in my pilates hair and outfit (and by super fly I mean not so fabulous)

 You will see these drawers again as I've already started refurbishing them.

Work it Wed - Blending

Look what interesting tid bit of information I found...

From Simply Recipes:

Did you know that many, if not most, blenders can be used with a standard mason jar, or wide-mouthed mason jar? This is a trick my mother taught me. Apparently 40 years ago or so, about the time this blender pictured was bought, manufacturers used to include a mason jar in the box with the blender...(see Simply Recipes Blog for the entire post)

The Simply Recipes blog recommends using this method for grounding spices, whipped cream or peanut butter. That's all well and good but I'm thinking this would be perfect for making a yummy Margarita and then just drinking right out of the jar. Please tell me someone else was thinking the same thing ?

Wow, am I really this messy? Yes, Yes I am. I can't believe I'm actually showing you the organized chaos I call my work room. Please know it's not always this messy.

I tell myself I should work on one project at a time but that's not realistic. I always have three, four, five or more projects going on at once and truth be told I like it that way. As you can see I am currently working on six projects:

A couple comments:

1)I would like to thank my sweet husband for putting up with my crazy creative mess. I know it drives him crazy and yet he says nothing about the mess but always comments on the finished piece.

2) In the first picture: No, that is not a dead horse laying in the middle of our floor. That is Muprhy, our Great Dane (many of you know him already). In the picture he looks sweet, innocent, calm... and for the most part he is. However, not ten seconds before I took this picture he was chewing on my husbands running shoe (also seen in the picture above). I swear he knows when to turn on the charm and act angelic.

Many of you have asked about the best way to hang these little works of art. The Atomic Chic asked:

"I rent so I'm unsure if I could pull off plate hanging, is there a way to hang them without having to nail them in?"

I have found the solution. Well, really it's wasn't ME who found it but after some research I found out what is the best product out there:

These are the Disc Hangers. As you can see they come in five sizes and hold weight up to 7 lbs. They range in price from $1.00-$3.00/hanger.

Behind the Scenes of HDV

First, let me apologize for not getting this post out sooner. Unfortunately my son and myself have been sick. Thank goodness we are all on the mend.

Back to the good stuff...

Meet Michelle and her two adorable boys Colin (left) and Tyler (right).

Michelle is a very good friend, client as well as my shipping go-to guru because Michelle is a Packaging Engineer at Fed Ex. She obviously knows about my business and understands packaging is my least favorite part of the process. Being the great friend that she is Michelle saves all extra boxes and inner packaging material for HDV.

By passing packing onto me Michelle is helping the environment and saving my customers money. Because of Michelle I do not need to purchase bubble wrap which ultimately allows me to lower the cost of shipping.

Last but not least...

My five year old daughter (hence the blurry effect) took this picture of Colin (Michelle's youngest son) and myself.

All in all my trip to visit Michelle and her kids was extremely successful. I was able to get a bunch of packaging, I got to see a good friend, my kids had a fantastic time playing and I even had a margarita. Not too shabby.

Friday - An Update

I know Fridays have always been reserved for Fashion. Not this week. Frankly I just don't feel like doing it. Instead I want to update my readers on my new favorite project..

This past week I've been working on a few things. Some of which include a baby girl's first jewelry box, an upcycled manual typewriter, and this amazing vintage gun rack. That's right, I said Gun Rack! In it's first life this was a gun rack. I worked all week transforming it into an ultra chic storage unit.

Here are a few pictures:

I love this thing. It would be a great conversational piece. 

In addition to the the two ideas above, this would be the perfect piece for...

A Kitchen: paper towels, places, sugar, hanging utensils from the peg board, etc...

Garden: store pots, seeds, garden utensils, etc..

Mud Room: Hang an umbrella and/or dog leash, keep keys, sunscreen, mail drop off spot, etc...

Nursery: diapers, lotions, toys, books, etc...

it would also be great for the pantry, laundry room, CRAFT ROOM, coffee center, bathroom toiletries, and on and on and on.

As you can see I'm rather excited about this one.
